Rating: G

Meta to follow.

Thank you again to Aeriel for the wonderful Individual Aspects, a really awesome Flora story.

I've only gotten through a fraction of what I've planned to read - the last week went by so fast - so I've still got so many stories to enjoy.

An overview is at [community profile] yuletide_admin.

My fandom year )

2016 in review )

Happy New Year! Wishing you all good things in 2017.
meteordust: (kujaku)
The highlight of my fandom year. And this year, I got a wonderful Chronicles of Amber story that is a fantastic look at Flora, her approach to life and politics, and her relationships with her siblings.

Title: Individual Aspects
Fandom: Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny
Summary: The simple truth is that I was born too late to be considered significant by my brothers and sisters. I am only senior to Random, and I know he feels much the same way. We must be content either to exist in the shadow of our elders or to create Shadows of our own where we are simply who we wish to be.

Thank you so much, Yuletide Writer! I hope you're having a wonderful Yuletide too.

I have to get back to frantic baking now, but I will be back later to read some of the 2406 stories in over 1369 fandoms in the Yuletide collection, not to mention more to be revealed tomorrow in the Yuletide Madness collection.

A while back, I made a Tumblr, but I haven't been terribly active on it. Mostly I use it for reblogging cool artwork.

But I've decided to make a sideblog to talk about playing Dragon Age: Origins, the same way I used to talk on this LJ about Ragnarok Online.

So, if you want to follow my misadventures hunting dragons, trying not to die, and romancing hot elves, feel free to check out Always An Archer.

A musical about Bobby Darin? Sure, "Beyond the Sea" is one of my favourite songs! This will be a fun distraction from current events.

I was not expecting it to rip my heart out.

Clearly, I did not know enough about the life of Bobby Darin.

Also, timing is everything.

I want to believe that people are basically good.

But some days it's fucking hard.

Don't ever stop even though your heart is breaking
Don't look over your shoulder at the love you left behind
They say life's too short but they're wrong
It's so long
Sometimes the only way to go is to just go on

We go on together. You are not alone.

Title: Four Minutes To A Lifetime
Fandom: Dungeons and Dragons (cartoon)
Summary: Four minutes. That's all it took to go from one world to another and back again.

Thank you, dear writer, for a lovely story and a great glimpse of Hank and Diana adjusting to their old lives.

556 works in 381 fandoms. Happy Halloween!
meteordust: (kujaku)
Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you so much for offering to write a story for me! I love all these fandoms, and I'm really keen to see what you do in them! I've provided some prompts in case you're looking for inspiration, but I'd also love to see whatever other ideas capture your imagination.

For me, it's about the characters and their relationships. I'm not a stickler for canon details, as long as the spirit of the characters and the flavour of their world is there. I want to see adventures that might have been, or missing moments from between scenes, or a slice of their daily lives, or where the future might take them.

LIKES: Some of the things I enjoy in stories are: undying loyalty, personal bravery, big damn hero moments, special everyday moments, subtle tension, conversations loaded with unspoken meaning, tough people showing a soft side, and soft people showing a tough side. I also like tropes such as amnesia, bodyswap, sex pollen, and undercover as a couple.

DISLIKES: I generally prefer optimistic stories for Yuletide, so I'm not keen on anything that is brutally violent or depressingly bleak. However, I don't mind darkness as long as there is a glimmer of light. Bittersweet endings are also fine.

SHIPPING: I'm a slash fan, but I also enjoy gen, het, and femslash. I'm fine with explicit sex, but it's usually not the most important part of the story for me.

STYLE: I'm fine with first, second, or third person. I'm fine with past or present tense. I'm fine with stories of any length, including stories that start in media res.

CROSSOVERS: I would prefer no crossovers with other canons.

AUS: I like seeing the characters in their own settings, so I would prefer no alternate universes like high school, coffee shop, or omegaverse. However, I like alternate universes where something happened differently in canon.

INTERACTIVE FICTION: I like interactive fiction and would welcome it.

I hope this helps. Have fun writing!

Yours sincerely,

This year will be my tenth Yuletide. I can't remember exactly how I heard about it. I think it was my first time doing a fic exchange, though I'd participated in fic challenges before. It seemed like an exciting idea - write a story and get a story! A chance for something in your rare fandom! It's only 1000 words!

That first year, I wrote a Vision of Escaflowne story - and I received not one but three stories, for Alliance-Union, Chronicles of Amber, and Dungeons and Dragons. Things were off to a very promising start! Over the years, I've been lucky enough to receive some amazing gifts, write some satisfying stories, and squee with other enthusiastic people about our shared rare fandoms.

If I were trying Yuletide for the first time today, I might well be intimidated by the huge production it has become, with all its arcane traditions: letters, treats, swaps, challenges, hippos, anonmemes, and so many spreadsheets. But at its heart, it's still a simple idea. Write a story. Get a story. Your rare fandom. 1000 words.

Sign ups are open.

The story I wrote for Trismegistus was:

Title: Say It With Flowers
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor
Rating: PG
Summary: Maia gives Csevet a somewhat unusual plant.

Thank you to my wonderful writers, Dragonsigma for Airmail, and Trismegistus for The New Emperor's Nohecharis.

Coronation Ceremony has been an awesome exchange, and I hope it runs again next year.
meteordust: (kujaku)
Works are revealed for Coronation Ceremony, a fanworks exchange for The Goblin Emperor! I was lucky enough to receive not one but two wonderful stories:

Title: Airmail
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor
Summary: For Ranis, travel by airship was hardly extraordinary, but he had to admit there was something enthralling to it.

Title: The New Emperor's Nohecharis
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor
Summary: When the new emperor arrives at court, Captain Orthema must appoint his nohecharei.

Thank you, dear writers, for your awesome worldbuilding and great characters. This exchange is everything I hoped for.

Dear Trick or Treat Writer,

Thank you so much for offering to write a story for me! The characters I've nominated are my favourites from their canons, and I'm keen to see what you come up with for them! I've requested fanfic for the below canons.

I've provided some prompts in case you're looking for inspiration, but I'd also love to see whatever other ideas capture your imagination. I'm open to tricks or treats, so feel free to interpret my prompts either way.

LIKES FOR THIS EXCHANGE: ghosts, supernatural beings, creepypasta, psychological horror, whump (without permanent harm), heroism, moments of relaxation and happiness.

DISLIKES FOR THIS EXCHANGE: noncon, mutilation, gruesome deaths, bleak endings (though ambiguous or bittersweet are fine).

RATING: I'm fine with explicit sex, but it's usually not the most important part of the story for me.

STYLE: I'm fine with first, second, or third person. I'm fine with past or present tense. I'm fine with stories of any length, including stories that start in media res.

POV: I'm open to stories from the point of view of a different character from the ones nominated, especially if they provide an interesting perspective on the nominated characters.

AUS: I like seeing the characters in their own settings, so I would prefer no alternate universes like high school, coffee shop, or omegaverse. However, I like alternate universes where something happened differently in canon.

I've listed more details under each individual request.

I hope this helps. Have fun writing!

Yours sincerely,

The story I wrote for labocat was:

Title: Conjunction of Suns
Fandom: X-Men: Apocalypse
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Apocalypse seduces Charles to his side.

Thank you again to my writer, thinlizzy2, for an amazing zombie apocalypse Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt story, Jacqueline has a Lesbian Experience!

Still so many stories to read at the main collection and the treat collection.

Rare Pair Fest stories are live! Main collection and treat collection.

Thank you, my wonderful Rare Pair Writer, for a delightful Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt story featuring Jacqueline and her archrival Deirdre in the zombie apocalypse.

Title: Jacqueline has a Lesbian Experience!
Fandom: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Summary: It's the zombie apocalypse and Jacqueline is stuck in a gross old Uber car with her kid, her ex-PA, the world's biggest diva, an old lady who stinks of old lady stink and that blue collar worker whose name she can never remember. She'd love to say things couldn't possibly get worse, but by this point she knows better.

My decision to try more exchanges this year is paying off. ^___^

Possibly the best movie musical of all time, so anyone doing a stage version has big shoes to fill. But it's hard to go wrong when you start with such great songs, and the Australian touring production did an admirable job.

Everyone talks about how they MADE IT RAIN ON STAGE for the showstopping title song. And it was pretty impressive! Sprinklers in the ceiling pouring water down, and a shallow pool across the whole floor to collect it. Lots of splashing about. The first three rows of the audience were provided with rain ponchos for protection.

My personal highlights were "Make 'Em Laugh" and "Moses Supposes", two of my favourite songs from the movie. Adam Garcia, who was meant to be the lead, was injured, but his understudy (a role shared between Robyn Arthur, Rodney Dobson and Mike Bishop) was a great Don Lockwood. (I was impressed when I realised a different version of the film clips would have to be made for all three understudies.) It was cool to see Jack Chambers from So You Think You Can Dance Australia as Cosmo Brown, probably one of the most fun stage roles ever. Gretel Scarlett was a great Kathy Selden, especially in "Good Morning" and "Would You?" And Erika Heynatz was hilarious as Lina Lamont, who actually gets a song here, "What's Wrong With Me?".
