Thank you again to Aeriel for the wonderful Individual Aspects, a really awesome Flora story.

I've only gotten through a fraction of what I've planned to read - the last week went by so fast - so I've still got so many stories to enjoy.

An overview is at [community profile] yuletide_admin.

The highlight of my fandom year. And this year, I got a wonderful Chronicles of Amber story that is a fantastic look at Flora, her approach to life and politics, and her relationships with her siblings.

Title: Individual Aspects
Fandom: Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny
Summary: The simple truth is that I was born too late to be considered significant by my brothers and sisters. I am only senior to Random, and I know he feels much the same way. We must be content either to exist in the shadow of our elders or to create Shadows of our own where we are simply who we wish to be.

Thank you so much, Yuletide Writer! I hope you're having a wonderful Yuletide too.

I have to get back to frantic baking now, but I will be back later to read some of the 2406 stories in over 1369 fandoms in the Yuletide collection, not to mention more to be revealed tomorrow in the Yuletide Madness collection.

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you so much for offering to write a story for me! I love all these fandoms, and I'm really keen to see what you do in them! I've provided some prompts in case you're looking for inspiration, but I'd also love to see whatever other ideas capture your imagination.

For me, it's about the characters and their relationships. I'm not a stickler for canon details, as long as the spirit of the characters and the flavour of their world is there. I want to see adventures that might have been, or missing moments from between scenes, or a slice of their daily lives, or where the future might take them.

LIKES: Some of the things I enjoy in stories are: undying loyalty, personal bravery, big damn hero moments, special everyday moments, subtle tension, conversations loaded with unspoken meaning, tough people showing a soft side, and soft people showing a tough side. I also like tropes such as amnesia, bodyswap, sex pollen, and undercover as a couple.

DISLIKES: I generally prefer optimistic stories for Yuletide, so I'm not keen on anything that is brutally violent or depressingly bleak. However, I don't mind darkness as long as there is a glimmer of light. Bittersweet endings are also fine.

SHIPPING: I'm a slash fan, but I also enjoy gen, het, and femslash. I'm fine with explicit sex, but it's usually not the most important part of the story for me.

STYLE: I'm fine with first, second, or third person. I'm fine with past or present tense. I'm fine with stories of any length, including stories that start in media res.

CROSSOVERS: I would prefer no crossovers with other canons.

AUS: I like seeing the characters in their own settings, so I would prefer no alternate universes like high school, coffee shop, or omegaverse. However, I like alternate universes where something happened differently in canon.

INTERACTIVE FICTION: I like interactive fiction and would welcome it.

I hope this helps. Have fun writing!

Yours sincerely,

This year will be my tenth Yuletide. I can't remember exactly how I heard about it. I think it was my first time doing a fic exchange, though I'd participated in fic challenges before. It seemed like an exciting idea - write a story and get a story! A chance for something in your rare fandom! It's only 1000 words!

That first year, I wrote a Vision of Escaflowne story - and I received not one but three stories, for Alliance-Union, Chronicles of Amber, and Dungeons and Dragons. Things were off to a very promising start! Over the years, I've been lucky enough to receive some amazing gifts, write some satisfying stories, and squee with other enthusiastic people about our shared rare fandoms.

If I were trying Yuletide for the first time today, I might well be intimidated by the huge production it has become, with all its arcane traditions: letters, treats, swaps, challenges, hippos, anonmemes, and so many spreadsheets. But at its heart, it's still a simple idea. Write a story. Get a story. Your rare fandom. 1000 words.

Thank you thank you thank you to [personal profile] reishiin, for not only writing me a gorgeous Fallen London story, a dereliction, but actually creating an entire interactive fiction game, light beneath water, which is just. Wow. More than anything I could have dreamed, and if you want to play through a beautifully written mythic story about the Masters of the Bazaar, I highly recommend it! (Now with added endnotes.) This has been an incredible Yuletide for me.

I still haven't gotten to everything I planned to read, so I'm looking forward to lots more stories to enjoy! A summary of this year's Yuletide is at [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin.

This is my favourite time of year. Due to the timing of archive opening and family events, I could only get to it at certain times. But it was worth the wait.

Some years I wonder if I'll match at all, because my requests can be pretty obscure. But not only did I match, I got two amazing and perfect gifts!

Title: a dereliction
Fandom: Fallen London | Echo Bazaar
Summary: Veils and Candles, through the Fallen Cities and before.

Title: light beneath water
Fandom: Fallen London | Echo Bazaar
Summary: Many years later, you will alight at Winking Isle on the sand beside the well, with your face to the sea, to the storming Neath-sky, to the Wax-Wind that sears and tears at your wings, and drop the last of seven candles into the well and whisper, "Are you..." (An interactive story of the Masters of the Bazaar.)

They are both everything I could have asked for and more. They capture the sense of mystery and epicness I love in the mythology of Fallen London, but I wasn't expecting so many feelings about Candles and Veils. And no one has ever made interactive fiction for me before! I feel like the luckiest Yuletider ever.

Thank you so much, Yuletide Writers! You are amazing and I love you.

Thanks so much to Shadowlover for your beautiful gift, Through the Water Brightly. I've wanted a story about Morganthe for years, and I'm so happy you wrote this for me.

And thank you to AceQueenKing for your fantastic treat, Lightning Strikes Twice. Loved seeing Lee and his interactions with Jin and Kazuya.

I still haven't gotten through a fraction of the stories I hope to read. 2684 works in 1623 fandoms in Yuletide, and

Thank you, Yuletide Writer! I've wondered for a long time what would happen if Lee met Jin, and this was a fantastic take on the question.

Thank you, Yuletide Writer, for a beautiful story. I'm so happy you've taken my prompt about Morganthe and made her into a real and yearning person, with such a deft voice.

For me, it's about the characters and their relationships. Feel free to bend canon details, as long as the personalities and dynamics ring true. These people have powerful feelings about each other, and that's what sparks my interest in them. I want to see the moments in between scenes, or the adventures that might have been.

Some of the things I enjoy in stories are: undying loyalty, personal bravery, big damn hero moments, special everyday moments, subtle tension, conversations loaded with unspoken meaning, tough people showing a soft side, and soft people showing a tough side.
