X-Men: Days of Future Past
Days of Future Past is my absolute favourite storyline from the X-Men animated series, so I was thrilled when I heard they were making this into the next movie. (Even if I couldn't expect Gambit to star in it.) Then again, we've all been burned before, so I tried to moderate my expectations.
But now it strikes me I have no idea how to review this movie. There was stuff that was cool, and stuff that was argh, and stuff that was awww, but I couldn't actually tell you how it hangs together as a narrative. So much of it depends on everything that has come before, and what I kept thinking was, are they going to include this person? are they going to include this scene? and it's still a swirl of moments to me.
Random thoughts:
* The new Sentinels were impressively terrifying, especially when they split open their faces to shoot flame. And it was unexpected and delightful to get to see the old Sentinels too, in their clunky garish glory. It's like the difference between the T1000 and the original Terminator.
* The future might have been a hellhole, but it had more interesting characters. Loved meeting Blink and Warpath. And of course, there was Stewart!Charles and McKellen!Erik. I'm still sad that Kitty didn't get to do much more than sit next to Wolverine's comatose body, but I guess it's a nod to the original comics that she's the one with the power to send him back in time?
* I loved all the 1970s fashion. Brown leather jackets and tight paisley shirts for the win.
* I was disappointed that Raven was presented as the bad guy they had to stop, especially since all the good guys were, well, guys. Loved her hero moment of stepping forward as the president and offering her life to end the killing. Loved that she shot and stopped Erik. Glad that Jennifer Lawrence got a lot of material to work with. I'm a little sad we didn't get to see Rebecca Romijn as well, but since even Rogue had all of one line, it was probably too hard to work her in.
* Quicksilver was totally an obnoxious brat, but he stole every scene he was in. I wished Scarlet Witch had been there too though. Loved "My mom knew a guy who could do that." Now I kind of want roadtrip fic where Erik tries to instil his values into his unruly offspring, and hijinks ensue.
* Loved the Really Awkward Plane Ride. Especially getting to see Erik apologising to Charles, after reading so many versions of it in fic.
* Dammit, did they have to kill off Angel? Also, I missed the rollcall of victims, but was Emma Frost on it? And what happened to Azazel and Riptide?
* I'm glad that Erik didn't actually kill JFK.
* I'm not entirely sure that introducing metal bands into a Sentinel is the same as reprogramming it to obey your commands, but oh well.
* When Wolverine fell into the Potomac, I kept thinking, "Somebody dive in and pull him out!" And then I felt sad that they were all too busy.
* They undid X3! And possibly all the other movies. But yay for people being alive! The ending at the school is like a happy dream. Not sure where they'll go from here, or where I want them to go from here.
