Snowboarding on the slopes of hell...
Last night's Roswell episode, 'Ch-Ch-Changes', was an unusual one - unusual because it was a Liz-centric episode that 1) was actually interesting to watch, and 2) made me feel sympathetic towards her. This is not normal - not for a longstanding member of the I Hate Liz Parker club.
I think the last time this happened was late in second season, when Liz was investigating Alex's death in the face of opposition from Max. That was when Max not only began to edge in front of Liz in the Most Annoying Character stakes, but shot ahead and left her in the dust. His "I'm the King and you'll all do as I say" act was appalling, especially the way he threatened to crush Isabel's college plans. Normally, I would have said then that Max and Liz deserved each other, but Liz's refusal to be cowed by him had me cheering her on.
I have to say, I've found Liz a lot more tolerable this season. Perhaps it's because the show doesn't focus so much on her mooning over Max. In last night's episode, for example, I liked seeing her deal with her new alien powers (and not wanting to burden Maria with more alien weirdness during her critical big break), and I liked seeing her lay plans for her future (she wants to go to Harvard, Max - you're still bumming on your friend's couch).
I liked how the first person Liz went to for help was Kyle. (Yay! Kyle!) He was so adorable this episode, from his mortification over his dad's sexy duet with Maria, to his anxiety about starting to turn into an alien. When Liz said of Max, "He risked so much when he healed me. It's what made me fall in love with him", Kyle's deadpan "Yeah, me too" had me squeeing in delight.
I can't believe how much he's changed since the start of the series. It would be ironic if Liz and Kyle ended up back together, after everything each of them had been through. At this stage, I think I'd welcome it. Interesting how both of them are the only ones to have been brought back to life by an alien. That's the kind of thing that changes you (coughLexcough), and it gives you a special connection to anyone else who's been through the same process.
