The year in review
It certainly has been A Year. A lot of family health stuff, and everything going on in the world.
My fandom year
Fanfic: I wrote very little fic. I took part in Hurt/Comfort Exchange and Yuletide.
I wrote 3 stories this year:
1 - Good Omens - Burning Dreams (Hurt/Comfort Exchange)
2 - Yuletide fandoms (to be revealed)
Fandoms: I read and watched a lot of awesome new stuff, but didn't really get fannish about any of it. In Fallen London, I was excited about making my first Noman, but kind of fell behind on other storylines.
Platforms: I continued posting to Dreamwidth, and continued cross-posting fic to my Dreamwidth fic journal. I didn't really do anything on Tumblr and Discord.
2024 in review
1. What did you do in 2024 that you'd never done before?
I'm not really sure. Something to keep in mind for the new year.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Always a work in progress. I started rebuilding habits, paid more attention to my health, and got better at making decisions.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes.
5. What countries did you visit?
None.
6. What would you like to have in 2025 that you lacked in 2024?
More words on the page. Less mental and physical clutter.
7. What date from 2024 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Family health stuff. World political stuff.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I completed the
getyourwordsout challenge for the first time. It really helped to switch from the word count goal to the habit goal. I guess I'm still figuring out what works for me.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not finishing a major project.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
A few colds.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Lots of books.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Once again, anyone being kind to others.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The voters (and non-voters) of America.
14. Where did most of your money go?
The mortgage.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The end of year holidays. So good to have this break!
16. What song will always remind you of 2024?
"If I Had My Time Again" from Groundhog Day: The Musical. Even though so much depressing stuff has happened this year, I still love that this song is brimming with joyous possibility.
17. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing. And finishing writing projects.
18. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating on the internet.
19. How will you be spending Christmas?
With family.
20. What was your favorite TV program?
X-Men '97 - the continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series - just hit it out of the park. I was there for the nostalgia, but it was moving and relevant and awesome. (Still love that quote from one viewer: "I'm still baffled, how the fuck did they nail it this hard. They somehow made the show we remember, not the actual one we saw.")
I also really enjoyed My Life is Murder, Doctor Who, One Piece Live Action, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Agatha All Along, A Man on the Inside, and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
21. What was the best book you read?
I was really impressed by the Everyone series by Benjamin Stevenson, a love letter to the Golden Age murder mystery. I also mainlined The Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman, which really is that good, both hilarious and heartwrenching. And I fell in love with the Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan, which I still have to post about.
22. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Another good year for musicals! I particularly loved Groundhog Day and Zombie!.
23. What did you want and get?
Staying in touch with people through everything this year.
24. What was your favorite film of this year?
I have to say Wicked. All my doubts about splitting it into two movies, gone. And those 2 hours and 40 minutes, felt like no time at all.
25. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Cake with family. Older but wiser.
26. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If Neil Gaiman had not turned out to be a terrible person.
27. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2024?
Probably the same as the last few years.
28. What kept you sane?
As always, friends and family.
29. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Ncuti Gatwa is just so sunny and gorgeous and amazing as the Doctor.
30. What political issue stirred you the most?
The US elections.
31. Who did you miss?
Absent friends.
32. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm not sure I have an answer to this.
33. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2024:
It's about the people who are with you on the journey. You can give each other strength.
34. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Never give up hope
Never let yourself be defeated
Okay, I know this is actually a super dark song, about not giving up the hope of, well, giving up on life. ("Hope" from Groundhog Day: The Musical.) But it's so easy to just listen to the chorus and hear it as the opposite - about hanging on and grimly slogging through each day, refusing to lay down or give up.
For me, it's a great soundtrack to thinking, "Despite everything, I'm not giving up hope, and I'm not giving up."
Happy New Year! Wishing you good things in 2025.
