The year in review
Posting a bit in advance this year.
My fandom year
Fanfic: I wrote a mix of fic inside and outside of fandom exchanges. I took part in Chocolate Box, Hurt/Comfort Exchange, Gen Freeform Exchange, CharactOR Exchange, and Yuletide.
I hit exchange burnout halfway through the year and took a break for a few months until Yuletide. It was a good decision.
I was planning to work on finishing up some WIPs, but I ended up sucked into a totally different project. If you had told me at the start of this year, that I would finish with 17K of fic for Moon Knight about Arthur Harrow, I would have said, "What? And who?" Obsessions are weird, man. At least I've gotten it out of my system now. (Or have I?)
Anyway. I wrote 12 stories this year:
4 - Moon Knight
- Artificial Stars
- Glass and Sand
- Hourglass and Quicksand
- Glasshouses and Sandcastles
1 - Island of Ghosts - Mark of the Wolf (Chocolate Box)
1- The Mandalorian - A Child Arrived Just The Other Day
1 - The Silmarillion - Once Upon a Time at the End of the World (Gen Freeform Exchange)
1 - Watership Down - El-ahrairah and the Labyrinth of Ice (Hurt/Comfort Exchange)
1 - The Goblin Emperor - Everything That Sings (CharactOR Exchange)
1 - Daybreakers - The Cost of Living
2 - Yuletide fandoms (to be revealed)
Fandoms: I guess my newest fandom is Moon Knight, and I guess Arthur Harrow is my new fave. Also, in Fallen London, I finally achieved my Ambition. And, if tennis counts as fandom, Roger Federer retired.
Platforms: I continued posting to Dreamwidth, and all but gave up crossposting to LiveJournal. I continued to neglect my Tumblr. I think I logged onto Discord once.
2022 in review
1. What did you do in 2022 that you'd never done before?
This year has been so intense and exhausting, I feel like there must be something, but hell if I can remember it at this stage.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Always a work in progress. Also, I feel like it was January just last week.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What countries did you visit?
None.
6. What would you like to have in 2023 that you lacked in 2022?
Better habits, schedules, and goal setting strategies.
7. What date from 2022 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
That day when a close family member had to go to hospital suddenly.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Aside from family stuff, finishing a 10K fic.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not finishing a major project.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I had my first cold in three years. It hit me with a vengeance.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Probably the new microwave.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Celebration almost seems too frivolous a word, but all the health workers in the pandemic and all the rescue workers in the floods.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The Russian government.
14. Where did most of your money go?
The mortgage.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting to see Come From Away at last.
16. What song will always remind you of 2022?
"Carry You" (Tim Minchin).
17. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Organising catch ups with friends.
18. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating on the internet.
19. How will you be spending Christmas?
With family.
20. What was your favorite TV program?
Moon Knight came out of nowhere and hooked my heart. Ms Marvel charmed and delighted me just as much as I had hoped from the comics. Upright made me laugh and cry and introduced me to the amazing Milly Alcock.
21. What was the best book you read?
Too many to name, but three of the ones I loved the most were Gillian Bradshaw books: The Beacon at Alexandria, The Sand-Reckoner, and Cleopatra's Heir.
22. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The musical The Lovers! I also really enjoyed the first ever studio album from Tim Minchin, Apart Together.
23. What did you want and get?
Staying in touch with people through everything this year.
24. What was your favorite film of this year?
Everything Everywhere All At Once smashed my heart into pieces and then mended it again. The Lost City was everything the trailer promised and more. Daybreakers was the best future noir vampire film ever.
25. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Cake with family. Older but wiser.
26. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Finishing a major project.
27. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2022?
Fashion belongs to normal time, which I've lost all sense of.
28. What kept you sane?
As always, friends and family.
29. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Okay, fine, I finally get the Oscar Isaac hype. And while I wouldn't say I fancy Ethan Hawke, I did end up watching quite a few of his movies.
30. What political issue stirred you the most?
Politics was kind of a trash fire this year, with the exception of the federal election. Whether it was the war in Ukraine or the overturning of Roe v Wade, there was no lack of terrible stuff happening.
31. Who did you miss?
Absent friends.
32. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm not sure I have an answer to this.
33. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2022:
Time flies, whatever you're doing with yourself in the meantime.
34. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Stop the world
Take a picture
Try to capture
To ensure this moment lasts
Happy New Year! Wishing you good things in 2023.
