Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Musical

So several weeks ago, Event Cinemas screened the stage musical of Sailor Moon, which was also a Takarazuka Revue production! Thus combining two of my favourite things.
It was pretty much everything I could have wished for.
The musical covered the Sailor Stars storyline, which was the final arc of the series and completely new to me. So I got to enjoy the suspense of the plot unfolding.
The main thing I knew about that storyline was, the Sailor Stars were undercover as male students (who happen to be a boy band), but were actually female senshi (on a mission from space). This gender play worked really well with Zuka, and it was neat to see how the performers managed both sets of roles and costumes.
I love that the story was driven by the power of friendship, as well as Usagi's own love, compassion, courage, sacrifice, and determination.
Tuxedo Mask was played by Yuuga Yamato, who was the lead performer of Cosmos Troupe in the very first live performance I ever saw. She was excellent as always, with great comic timing and dramatic flair. Plus she really knows how to rock a cape.
Shadow Galaxia, the main villain, chewed scenery like a giant ham and was completely awesome.
Normally, I'm suspicious of mysterious children from the future and find them to be quite sinister. But Chibi-Chibi was played by an actual child, and she was completely adorable. The audience loved her.
I'm told that the manga ends on a rather sombre note, but the musical pulled out a happy ending, in which everyone comes back to life and Usagi and Mamoru get married. All the other senshi show up in wedding dresses too, and it's cheesy as hell but exactly what everyone ordered.
There were about a billion times Usagi and Mamoru seemed like they were about to kiss, only for it to turn into a hug every time. It was ridiculous, and the performers were obviously milking it for everything it was worth. They finally kissed at the wedding, and there was a huge cheer from the audience.
Great performances and great singing, with humour, drama, and heart. I really hope it gets a local DVD release.
