Yesterday I went to see Volcano High, which was screening at the Hayden Orpheum as part of the Asian Film Festival. I'd been wanting to watch this movie ever since I saw the trailer at last year's Animania. Back then, I thought it looked like a cross between X, Battle Royale, and The Matrix. I wasn't far wrong - except for the fact that Volcano High has a liberal splash of comedy as well.

Volcano High is a school where everyone - students and teachers alike - is some kind of high-powered martial arts expert with psychic powers. Kim Kyung-soo is a new transfer student with special abilities of his own who has already been kicked out of nine schools. He lands in the middle of a war between the different factions at Volcano High, who are all after the same thing - the legendary Secret Manuscript.

The movie was a lot of fun to watch - not too heavy on plot, but entertaining nonetheless. Parts of it were very melodramatic, but that fit in well with the style of the movie, and in any case I quite like that kind of thing. I thought Song Hak-rim was cool and wished we'd seen more of him. Jang Ryang made me think of Touga, with his black hair dyed red at the tips, although his personality more resembled Saionji's.

I haven't made up my mind yet about whether I'll be going to see the other movies at the festival. I'm tempted to check out Avalon though, especially after seeing the trailer.

And last but not least, welcome back to RO, Lumi. ^________^
