Happenings
Jun. 11th, 2011 09:45 amIt's been an eventful few weeks.
* Went to the first Free Comic Book Day I've been to in a while, at Kinokuniya. Picked up Tides of Hope (a Queensland floods fundraiser anthology), Otomen Volume 10 (the manga that is my guilty pleasure), and the Dark Crystal/Mouse Guard sampler (my free comic book).
* Swung by Galaxy Bookshop's relocation sale. Saddened to learn that they were going to be moving upstairs of Abbeys Bookshop. I know that they're sister shops, but it's different from having your own shopfront on street level. Galaxy used to be my favourite bookshop for years, and I'm still exceedingly fond of it.
* Attended the Fellowship of the Ring concert with
_leareth and friends, in which the Sydney Symphony Orchestra played a live score to the movie, accompanied by the Sydney Philharmonic Choirs and the Sydney Children's Choir. It was pretty damn cool and gave me a new appreciation of the music. And it reminded me what it was like to see this movie for the first time. Hobbiton! Moria! Lothlorien! The Argonath! Hard to believe it was ten years ago.
* Listened to former High Court Justice Michael Kirby give a talk at Stanton Library on his new biography. It was my first time hearing him talk, and he was a fantastic speaker: confident, enthusiastic, and witty. He was asked about what he thought of judges being forced to retire at seventy, and he said he agreed with it, for the sake of new blood in institutions. He added that when people used to tell him, "Since I retired, I've never been busier!" he would think, "What are you on about, you silly duffer?" But now that he's retired, he's never been busier.
* Went to
stikman's launch of his exhibition 'Amoroso' at the Kinokuniya Wedge Gallery, the final part of his seasons quartet. As intriguing and surreal as always. Looking forward to seeing what the next project is...
* Attended the MCA Zine Fair and had some interesting but inadmissible adventures. Also caught up with
stikman and
mrtang there.
* Checked out the Vivid Sydney festival with
evilhayama,
fluffyduck,
ricvirzar and E. Impressed with how much bigger and more spectacular it was than last year. Highlights were the Customs House animated image projection (showing the rise and fall of the building), the Firedance pyrotechnic display (with literal fireballs), the MCA interactive paint projection (throwing digital paint on the walls), the Jellight (giant floating jellyfish!), and of course, the lighting of the Opera House sails. And it being a Saturday night, there were stalls all through the Rocks, selling food and crafts, and crowds of people wandering about. It was like my dream city, where you can stroll around after dinner with friends, and experience cool stuff. And I love that so many people were taking photos and getting excited about the exhibits, and that it normalises going out to see public works of art.
Still very behind with the friendslist entries, but hoping to catch up soon.
