Every single word of that article is correct. I've been watching this in horror from the UK for the past six months, fearing that exactly this would happen. I wrote three times to my Australian MP (who is in the ALP), begging her to raise this as an issue, and got no response.

Unfortunately, the Australian political solution to every problem is 'close the borders and encourage everyone within those borders to live their lives as normal, asking as few questions as possible.' This will, eventually, have consequences. I'm so sorry you're all in this situation.

Thanks for the link. I've got a cousin in Melbourne (I'm in the US) who has been posting about her indecision between getting AZ or holding out for Pfizer--she got the AZ. So nice to see an analysis.

There is a part of me that's like--the right call would have been for Australia to give most of a billion dollars to a private corporation... I'm expecting there to be hearings into pharmaceutical companies when all this shakes out, but we're still clearly in pay whatever it takes to end this mode (which I 100% agree with).

I wish the government would listen (or had listened) to the advice. But often it feels like the decision makers are just following their own priorities.

I keep thinking about "Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck". We were lucky early on, and we wasted the opportunity.
