Spent the first day of the new year trying not to melt in the 40 plus degree heat. Didn't dare switch on my computer till the southerly buster came through, just in case it imploded. Was more comfortable taking that risk with the TV and VCR. Result: increased my pop culture knowledgebase and decreased my chocolate stash. Wondering if it is normal to have finished a whole box of chocolates in the week between Christmas and New Year.

This time last year, I did one of those 'year in review' memes. One of the questions was, "Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004." My answer was, "Everything changes." But if I were to respond for 2005, my answer would be, "Everything is going to keep changing." I suspect that learning that lesson is the difference between youth, when all you want is to change the world, and maturity, when you discover that the world changes whether you like it or not. Which sounds awfully old fogey of me, I guess, but 2005 hammered home to me in numerous ways that anything you expect to be around forever - won't. So it's all the more important to appreciate the world we live in, and the people we care about, and the moment we have now. I think we'll be okay, if we remember this. Or at least have fewer regrets, in the end.

This year, I resolve not to take things for granted.
