West Side Story
Jul. 21st, 2010 11:33 pmOn the weekend, I finally saw West Side Story! Even though it's not in my personal top five, it's such a classic that I had to seize the chance while it was playing in Sydney. And I was not disappointed! Bolder and darker than the equally classic movie, it had fantastic singing and dynamic dance action. We had the understudy Tony, and he was amazing! Such a beautiful, supple, powerful voice. I cannot imagine what the actual lead is like. My favourite songs are still 'Tonight' and 'Gee, Officer Krupke', and they did both very well. My least favourite song is still 'Cool', but they made it reasonably interesting. The ending is the only disconcerting thing; I'm mostly used to musicals that finish with rousing big ensemble numbers, instead of, well. Yeah. Still! I highly recommend.
I am in a musicals mood! But Sydney seems to be in a dry spell at the moment. The only name I'm hearing bandied about is Jersey Boys.
