I haven't really done meta for my stories before, plus this is spectacularly late, but it's Australia Day and I'm hiding from the sweltering heat. So anyway.

Notes on Breaking Patterns (Chronicles of Amber)

* I've offered this fandom for four years running, ever since I joined Yuletide, but this was the first time I've been assigned it, so woot for the chance to finally write it.

* I'd never thought about writing a Fiona story before, but she certainly makes interesting things happen. The hook was her interest in Corwin's Pattern, which Merlin had dismissed, and which never got explored in the books. (And which, well, has a logical conclusion...) The rest was how to get from here to there, plus what other cool stuff to add.

* The family conference from Sign of the Unicorn is one of my favourite scenes in the series, so I had to include something similar. Also, bonus hellride.

* I did learn that just because I read these books over and over ten years back did not mean I recalled the details now. Cue hasty review. Also, ten books is a lot of canon to track.

* In relation to the above, the Complete Amber Sourcebook would be a hell of a lot more useful as a research tool if it was clear which bits were concordance and which bits were its author - who was not Zelazny - making stuff up.

* I did some agonising over canon details (isn't someone guarding Corwin's Pattern? could Fiona really take down Merlin?), but in the end those questions got handwaved. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

* Short story canon? What short stories?

* I really wasn't sure whether the title was too much of a spoiler, but I couldn't think of another one I liked, so it stayed.

* Amber has so many possibilities! I'm looking forward to offering it again next time.

Notes on Absolution (Seafort Saga)

* I've never offered this fandom before, though I've thought about requesting it. I think the main reason I didn't was because I didn't think anyone would write it. But after seeing there are other fans, this is so going on my request list next time.

* I didn't actually offer it this time either, but after I saw [livejournal.com profile] kangeiko's prompt in the Yuletide letters, and read her awesome fandom pimp post, I ended up spending the next two weeks rereading my Seafort Saga books. And thinking, hmmmm.

* No one else I know has read these books, except for one friend who is actually in the military, and who I'm pretty sure does not share my views on the slashability of these characters.

* The plot fell into place remarkably easily, since these characters are very clear about who they are. Whenever I was stuck, I would think, "What would Nick do?" And the answer would be, "Rage!" or "Angst!" And that usually worked pretty well.

* I did some angsting myself over canon details (don't Nick and Annie still share a cabin this trip? would he really be down with being with Edgar or would he just beat himself up over it?), but again, handwaved for story purposes.

* Thank heavens for the Boxing Day extended deadline. This was the first time I ever wrote any treats in addition to my assignment. Hugely fun, must do again.
