I know, almost halfway through the year, but better late than never.

In 2012, I read 35 books:

22 were fiction
13 were non-fiction
7 were novels
2 were collections
0 were anthologies
15 were by authors I had read before
20 were by authors I had never read before
2 were first novels in a series
7 were other novels in a series

Highlights:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - It's always really cool when something lives up to the hype. Brilliant and devastating and really just that good. I don't know if I can even bear to watch the third movie.

The Foundling by Georgette Heyer - I got back into Heyer last year, and read my way through a bunch of new novels. But this story was far and away my favourite.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein - I love her Aksum novels, but the main reason I picked this one up is because everyone raved about how awesome it was. And they were right! Female friendship and adventure and heroics and heartbreak and unreliable narrators.

Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold - The long awaited Ivan book. And I'm not sure whether to put it as a highlight or not - I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but it could have been so much deeper and richer and riskier, like his version of Mirror Dance or Memory. (There are two Ivan fics that are very different but equally compelling visions of his future - Guerilla by Glishara and Twenty-Year Man by ellen_fremedon - and I wanted something with that level of emotional upheaval.)
