The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Dec. 31st, 2013 04:59 pmI am a Tolkien book fan, first and foremost, but I'm less emotionally invested in The Hobbit than in The Lord of the Rings. The main thing I'm still saddened by is that Bilbo is more action hero than smart and brave and sensible (I missed his clever taunting of the spiders of Mirkwood), but for the rest of it, I'm just enjoying the romp through Middle-Earth.
The highlights for me:
* Tauriel and Legolas. Neither of whom are in the book, but whatever. I loved Evangeline Lilly in LOST, and she looks suitably elfy and was asskickingly cool. And Legolas, man, you haven't aged a day.
* The forges of Erebor! It was awesome seeing them come to life, and getting a sense of what the place would have been like in days of yore. It was my beacons of Gondor moment for this movie.
* Smaug. Hell yeah, a dragon that shows why dragons were so terrifying.
* The windlass crossbow and the black arrow. Seeing them envisioned in this way makes perfect sense for how an arrow could be a dragon-killer.
