Notes on You Light My Fire (From Eroica With Love)
I've loved this manga for years, but this is the first story I've written for it, and I'm relieved my recipient liked it.
entropynchaos requested something vaguely happy, and liked badass competence in her characters, which both Klaus and Dorian have in spades. I love their relationship and I had great fun writing them.
Holly Lisle once talked about candy bar scenes, which are the ones she most looks forward to writing, among all the necessary scenes. I tried to stuff as many candy bars into this story as possible: amnesia, banter, misunderstandings, declarations of love, saving each other, big damn hero moments, the works. And it was enormous fun. I feel like I'm guilty of action movie physics and lack of factual research, but hopefully it's entertaining.
Notes on Precession (Seafort Saga)
I tend to be a slow writer, so when we got two whole months this time to write, I was really excited. I could complete my assignment in plenty of time *and* write a whole bunch of treats!
Heh. My assignment took longer than I expected, so I only had time for one treat, and I was down to the wire on it. Writing on Christmas Eve, and writing on Christmas morning, and thank heavens for timezones that I live in the future.
kangeiko's prompts included the timeframe of "post-retirement Tolliver sticking to Nicky's side through exile, revolution, and a second bout of child rearing", which I'd never explored before. I was leafing through Fisherman's Hope when I saw Tolliver's line about wishing to see Vega someday. It reminded me powerfully of Helva and Jennan's dream of visiting the Horsehead Nebula in Anne McCaffrey's The Ship Who Sang. And I wondered if Vega was something Nick would do for Tolliver someday, when they had retired and found peace. When I learned that Vega used to be the pole star too, I knew I had to write about it.
Originally, there was supposed to be a whole middle section about Nick and Tolliver being held hostage by the saboteurs, but I had to jettison it when the deadline loomed, in favour of "Ten hours later...". Maybe another time.
The title refers to the precession of the equinoxes that determines where the pole star is. (Thanks, Wikipedia!)
