The year in review

My fandom year
Fanfic: All the fic I wrote this year was for fandom exchanges. I took part in Chocolate Box, Soul Exchange, Coronation Ceremony, Trick or Treat, and Yuletide.
I wrote five stories this year:
1 - Chronicles of Amber (The Way of the Axe)
1 - The Goblin Emperor (Empresses)
1 - Original fic (Under the Midsummer Moon)
1 - Yuri!!! on Ice (On the Wings of Love)
1 - Yuletide fandom (to be revealed)
Fandoms: In terms of what I got excited about, I was sucked into the massive Yuri!! on Ice whirlpool, and I experienced the wonderful nostalgia of the resurgence of Roger and Rafa in tennis.
Platforms: I switched to posting at Dreamwidth and cross-posting to LiveJournal. I occasionally checked Tumblr. I joined Discord but haven't participated much so far.
2017 in review
1. What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?
Tracked my yearly word count. Played combat archery. Took classes for an art I've been wanting to learn. Tested the limits of how far I can walk in a day.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
It's a work in progress.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What countries did you visit?
None.
6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
An overseas holiday.
7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
See answer 3.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Figuring out why I had no energy and getting help to fix it. It makes everything else possible.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not completing more original projects.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major, but so many colds this winter.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Tickets to one of the best conventions I've been to.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
The YES voters for same-sex marriage.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The NO campaigners against same-sex marriage.
14. Where did most of your money go?
The mortgage.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Fedal final at the Australian Open, and the Fedal alliance at the Laver Cup.
16. What song will always remind you of 2017?
How Far I'll Go from Moana.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? About the same.
iii. richer or poorer? About the same.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spending time appreciating the world around me.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Wasting time on internet forums.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With family.
21. What was your favorite TV program?
Yuri!!! on Ice got me into anime fandom again, so it has to be on the list. Wynonna Earp was so unexpectedly delightful and charming (if a tad gory), so it's another worthy mention.
22. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No, it seems to be the usual suspects, and it seems to involve politics, as always.
23. What was the best book you read?
I'll make a full post later. But right now I want to give a shout out to The Ladies of Mandrigyn by Barbara Hambly, a classic sword and sorcery book with a refreshing approach to the genre.
24. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The songs of Kinky Boots: The Musical. Cyndi Lauper and everyone did an amazing job.
25. What did you want and get?
A new job.
26. What was your favorite film of this year?
I watched a lot of good stuff this year! Full post later. Movies that blew me away were Kubo and the Two Strings, Arrival, and Logan. Honourable mentions for Terminator Genisys, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, ReLIFE, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Biggest disappointment was Alien: Covenant. But it still gets beaten for worst movie by Young Guns.
27. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Cake with family. Older but wiser.
28. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Probably an impeachment.
29. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?
Comfortable.
30. What kept you sane?
As always, friends and family.
31. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Jason Isaacs sure succeeds in convincing me that his unethical Starfleet captain is worth watching.
32. What political issue stirred you the most?
The treatment of refugees and the reality of climate change.
33. Who did you miss?
Absent friends.
34. Who was the best new person you met?
See answer 3.
35. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017:
Time is the most precious resource you have.
36. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I've been staring at the edge of the water
Long as I can remember
Never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water
No matter how hard I try
See the line where the
Sky meets the sea
It calls me
And no one knows
How far it goes
Happy New Year! Wishing you all a wonderful 2018.
