Just some brief notes about reactions, mostly for future reference, in case I want to compare with the other comics.
This is the Volume 1 of the 2021 run by Jed Mackay (writer), Alessandro Cappuccio (artist), and Rachelle Rosenberg (colour artist). It collects Issues 1-6.
Quite different from the TV series, but a pretty good intro to the comics.
* Focused on Marc. No appearances by Steven or Jake. Khonshu is in god jail for trying to take over the world. Sounds about right.
* Obviously lots of backstory, but it feels like a good jumping on point. Marc is estranged from his god, but is still carrying on his duty. He still calls himself "the High Priest of Khonshu", and has set up what he calls the "midnight mission" to protect his "congregration", the people travelling at night.
* I love that Marc spares the baby vampires and takes them under his protection, because they were innocent victims and not killers.
* I like the interludes with Dr Sterman, therapist to superheroes. They do a good job of filling in exposition, while being psychologically meaty conversations.
* Dr Sterman calls Marc out on using flowery language to deflect from his true feelings, but I love all his melodramatic lines:
- "My brain is moon-silvered, lunatic, cratered with a god's fingerprints. The deep structures of my mind have been irreversibly changed by communion with an ultraterrestrial intelligence. This is my poisoned ground. This is my temple."
- "Midnight. 'Owl noon.' Heh. Everyone thinks that a new day begins when the sun comes up. But that's not true. This, right now, is when a new day is born. It has to fight through the darkness in order to earn the light."
* Dr Badr - the other Fist of Khonshu! - also gets some cool lines:
- "You fight like an animal. You should move with the skill and prowess of every Fist to ever serve Khonshu. As I do. Did you not receive the gift of the chorus upon your ordination? Were the memories of Khonshu's previous Fists not invested in your mind?"
* I always love stories about people building communities. At the start of this volume, Marc is all on his own, but by the end, he's made connections, allies, and friends. The bit where he's walking through the neighbourhood, and all the locals are greeting him, and saying how worried they were about him, and how they're here for him just like he's here for them - just perfect.
* My favourite scene:
Marc: "Reese, this is Greer Nelson, better known as Tigra. We were Avengers together."
Tigra: "West Coast Avengers. WACKOS."
Reese: "Wow. I didn't know Mr Knight was an Avenger. West Coast though..."
Tigra: "Mr Knight...? Marc, why are you making this poor child call you that?"
Reese: "Marc? Oh my god, he has a name?"
Tigra: "Is this your new thing? Mask and suit? I haven't seen you in ages. Come on--let's see those peepers."
Marc: "Stop it. The mask protects the people in my life. If my enemies knew who I was, they could target my friends."
Reese: "Mr Knight, you sleep all day and beat up weirdos all night. You don't have any friends."
Tigra: "This is the guy who made a TV show about Moon Knight. His secret identity is on IMDB. 'Legend of Khonshu: Executive Producer, Marc Spector.'"
Reese: "Oh man--can I come work from you instead?"
Marc: "I am surrounded by horrible women..."
