Babylon 5 - S1E22 - Chrysalis
Aug. 16th, 2025 10:00 pmThe last episode of Season 1! We open with a date stamped on the scene like a countdown. Well, that's not ominous at all.
* Sinclair and Catherine get engaged! It says something about story tropes that I immediately went, "Oh no!" Like going on one last mission before your retirement. I was very relieved that they both ended the episode safe and well.
* Morden offers a favour to Londo. Definitely "Oh no!" Especially when there's no price stated, just a future favour owed.
* I loved that Sinclair and Catherine asked Garibaldi to be best man and Ivanova to be maid of honour. And Garibaldi reminiscing about how much they've been through together. It's only Season 1! But so much has happened already.
* The Shadows wiping out the Narn outpost in Sector 37, with 10,000 dead. I liked that G'Kar didn't jump to blaming the other alien nations, and ran through a list of why it couldn't be them. Leading to that sober realisation, "There's someone else out there."
* I've been dreading for a while something happening to the President. I don't know if it's from osmosis, or just effective foreshadowing. Like the Vice-President's very suspicious illness, leading him to be very suspiciously absent, when the President's ship exploded at the transfer point on Io. I thought it would be blamed on terrorists though, not classed as an accident.
* I'd also osmosed that the end of this season was when Delenn went into her chrysalis, to later emerge transformed.
* As a season finale, this episode set a lot of events in motion, whose consequences will reverberate into the future. So nothing like a satisfying conclusion, but a very open question. Like Sinclair said, "Nothing is the same anymore."
* Quote of the episode:
Big mood.

* Quote of the episode:
Sinclair: "Just that I've had this feeling lately, that we're standing at a crossroads. And I don't like where we're going. But there's still time to choose another path. You can be part of that process, G'Kar. Choose wisely. Not just for the Centauri, but for the good of your own people as well."
Big mood.
