"They also serve who only stand and wait."
Mar. 7th, 2004 06:32 pmIt's Sunday again. And what does that mean?
Siege day on RO.
Having just recently acquired the Spring Trap skill (with some unexpected drama in the process), I had a yearning to run around inside enemy forts and try it out. Alas, it was not to be.
There were no plans for Shin Ravenloft to mount a big assault anywhere this time around. Most of us were helping our allies, Playmates, to defend their fort, while others roved around probing other forts for weaknesses.
My job turned out to be keeping the corridor to the emperium room trapped. It was pretty quiet though, as few people attempted to invade, and those who did were swiftly dealt with by the front line defenders outside.
For the most part I was by myself, though others dropped in from time to time to keep me company. Over guild chat, I could hear Cyrus and the other Ravens giving updates about what was happening elsewhere this siege. They were looking for a castle to take, but none seemed too likely.
Playing defence can create some interesting dilemmas. On one hand, you may be itching for action. On the other hand, action usually means things are not going well for your side.
But after an hour and a half of this waiting game, even some of the Playmates people expressed boredom. I felt like suggesting to them that maybe Shin Ravenloft should attack their castle - y'know, kill two birds with one stone - but I wasn't sure if they would be amused.
With half an hour of siege time left, some of my guildmates decided to make a go for one of the more promising castles in Prontera. Since no one was attacking Playmates, this wasn't a problem. I stayed, not wanting to leave the defences too weakened, just in case anyone was going to try for a last minute surprise attack.
Fighting seemed to be heavy over in Prontera, with a number of guilds apparently having the same idea as us. With only five minutes to go, my guildmates were poised to launch yet another attack, when the guild Trees of Light succeeded in breaking the emperium. They had the castle, and everyone else was automatically warped back outside.
I could hear cries of disbelief from my guildmates - and then determination as they headed back inside. Only four minutes left. I could hear Gargust saying, "No time, no time" with sorrow. I couldn't tell what was happening.
Then it came from on high, all of a sudden, the GM announcement:
"The [Valkyrie Realms 3] castle has been conquered by the [Shin Ravenloft] guild."
There were only two minutes left.
I could hardly believe it.
A defence was scrambled together, and it held up for the remaining time. The castle was ours, and would be until the next War of Emperium session on Thursday.
Not just any castle either, but the very castle we had before. Our flag is flying above its walls once again. Home, sweet home, and how sweet it feels indeed.
Tadaima.
