Life has started moving quickly again, which means less time to write in the LJ. But I figure I should update before events overtake me entirely.

I had a pretty cool Easter weekend. On Good Friday, a number of us gathered at [livejournal.com profile] sentxd's place for a marathon of the Sailor Moon Live Action television series. I'd seen the first episode a couple of months back at Animania, and I was intensely curious about the rest of it. I'll save a full review for later, but I'll just say that by the end of the night, most of us couldn't wait for the next marathon and more episodes.

Easter Saturday was my sister's birthday. We had an interesting time messing around with a PS2 EyeToy, which was my first encounter with one of these little gadgets. Even thought the concept sounds kind of silly, once you actually start playing it's easy to forget your embarrassment and just get into it. Definitely a party game though - I can't imagine much fun in playing it solo.

We also watched Spartacus on DVD - a classic I'd been meaning to see for a while. Like the first time I watched Casablanca, I wasn't sure if the movie would be able live up to its reputation, but it did. What's amazing is that people went ahead and made epics like this back in the days before special effects. It's pretty humbling to realise that when you see a cast of thousands, it really *is* a cast of thousands, no computer trickery involved; and when horses fall down in battle or people get bashed about, you can't help wincing in sympathy.

Easter Sunday was another full day - soccer practice in the morning over at Parramatta, then back home for the siege on RO, and then off to the city to watch Starsky and Hutch with some friends. The movie was pretty much what I expected. I've never seen the original tv series, but I get the impression it was a fairly straightforward buddy cop action show, with enough subtext for a devoted fandom to develop. The movie, on the other hand, was definitely comedy - not exactly a parody, but kind of like the Stiller/Wilson version of the same concept. Entertaining enough, and only occasionally cringe-inducing.

The other thing I did over the long weekend was attend Necronomicon, the only RPG convention I never miss. I squeezed in three games this time. The first was a superhero RPG which was supposed to be dark and gritty, but ended up being hella funny. The second one was an adventure based on Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, which was a bit slow to start but turned out okay. The third was a 40 player freeform set at the turn of the 19th century in a world populated by supernatural creatures and powers. I played an evil cultist masquerading as a high level diplomat. Unfortunately my group was thwarted in its goal of resurrecting the ancient dark god it worshipped. Damn you, forces of light! And damn you too, backstabbing vampire infiltrator!
