Never say die

"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender."
- Winston Churchill
RO. Last Thursday's siege.
I didn't log on until twenty minutes into the siege, still being unused to the daylight saving time shift. What I found when I got on was absolute chaos. Apparently Flames of Passion had already gotten inside our castle and broken the emperium. And that had been the catalyst that drew all the other guilds to our door, like hyenas on a wounded lion.
It was brutal. Shortly after Flames of Passion took the fort, they lost it to Trees of Light, who in turn lost it to Renaissance. We then managed to recapture it briefly, before losing it to Novae Inflammo. And with every change of hands, the fort's economy and defence went down another five points, sending millions in carefully invested zeny spiralling down the drain.
I don't remember a siege as desperate and hard fought as this one. Those who were there just kept fighting and dying and fighting and dying and coming back and refusing to give up, even against overwhelming numbers. To be honest, I didn't think we could do it - that only pride and sheer stubbornness kept us going.
Three quarters of the way through the siege, the impossible happened. We got the fort back again. And this time, enough of us managed to get back to the emperium room in time to set up a proper defence. Even though we were sieged and sieged, we held fast, and when it was all over it was our banner that waved above the the castle walls.
In the aftermath, there were decisions to be made about the fate of our fort. Its economy was in ruins, and it seemed hardly worth reinvesting in it unless we could be sure of holding the castle in future.
A proposal was made to accelerate our plans for eventual relocation to a better fort - sponge off the treasure boxes for all we could and then break the economy back to zero before leaving. I was pretty shocked to hear matters discussed in these terms - it seemed very cold, especially after all the blood, sweat and tears we'd just poured into defending the castle.
In any case, I voted for staying, and I wasn't the only one. Valkyrie Realms 3 - our first fort, won almost by accident, defended ferociously, and regarded with affection in spite of its flaws.
No surrender for us, not as long there are Ravens left to fight.
