Bitter as ashes

RO. Last Thursday's siege.
After the disaster which was the previous siege, our objective was simple - help No Love regain their fort, Valkyrie Realms 4.
Simple doesn't mean easy, however.
Almost as soon as the siege started, Imperial took over the fort from Dragon Slayers. But not long after, No Love managed to wrest it from them. Imperial wasn't going to let it go so easily, however, and they continued to pound on No Love. It was pretty heavy going - even though I was part of the defence and therefore at an advantage, I still died quite a few times.
The siege only got more intense as it went on, with people from The Blue Hearts, Eternal Asura, and Gaia all showing up. According to Lenneth, Al De Baran and Geffen were glitchy again, which explained why all the big guilds from there had come to Prontera instead.
One thing I noticed was that kirbywiz, a former Shin Ravenloft guild member, was sitting at the entrance to the fort. He was now in Gaia, but had apparently chosen to remain an observer this siege. When one of his new guildmates urged him to join in the attack, I was pleasantly surprised to hear kirbywiz refuse, saying that some of the defenders were his friends.
Not everyone was of like mind. As I returned to the fray, I got hit with a Jupitel Thunder from a Playmates wizard. Playmates had been among our best and earliest allies, but once they went to Geffen and took a fort there, they joined the local alliance instead. I had thought us still on friendly terms at least, but it seemed as though this was no longer the case. This siege, they were helping their current allies, Gaia, and old ties of friendship took second place to that. Still, Lenneth messaged Raiyu, the leader of Playmates, to ask him to withdraw his people, and she told us he agreed to do so.
But even if that was something, it wasn't enough.
With only five minutes left until the end of the siege, Valkyrie Realms 4 fell to Gaia.
There was not enough time for a retake attempt to succeed.
It was a bitter defeat. Bitter because we had lost the fort so close to the end, after defending it so fiercely for almost the entire siege. Bitter because our former allies, Playmates, were now on the other side. Bitter because Gravity screwed up again, allowing the Alde and Geffen guilds to saunter into Prontera without fear and beat on us.
It was a dark day. All we could do was pick ourselves up and hope for tomorrow.
