Before it was released, I wasn't as psyched about this movie as I could have been, considering that Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite HP book. I suspect that the relatively lacklustre second movie had something to do with it. Fortunately, the third movie is both very watchable and a pretty good adaptation of the book.
Part of the reason the book was so enthralling was because of the dark, claustrophic mood and the escalating tension. The movie wasn't quite as intense, but it still held my interest all the way through. In fact, my main regret is that the movie felt too short - I think they could have fit more stuff in without losing the audience's attention. The backstory did suffer a little - for example, they never explained who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs were, or how Lupin knew so much about the map, or why Lupin's friends were all Animagi. I missed the little touches like Harry learning that his father's Animagus form was a stag, and Sirius signing Harry's permission slip, and Harry threatening the Dursleys with his murderous escaped convict godfather. But overall, yeah, it was a cool movie of a cool book.
And Buckbeak was just gorgeous. I want one of my own now.
