One week from now, it begins.

National Novel Writing Month is an annual event of epic proportions and heroic ambition. Now in its sixth year, it draws tens of thousands of participants from around the world, all eager to embrace the challenge of writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days.

The first year I did NaNo, I burned out halfway through, but it was still an amazing experience and I swore I would be back. The second year, I kept my oath and signed up as soon as registrations opened. I also learned from my mistakes of the previous year, developed new strategies, and made it across that finishing line.

And now, with November looming up once again, I'm getting ready to embark on my third NaNo adventure. I've been psyched about it for weeks now, making plans and outlines and notes, reading up on various texts, and haunting the official forums.

This past week hasn't been too kind to plans or peace of heart, and the next few weeks aren't going to be easy. All the same, when November rolls around, I can't imagine not being there, part of this great creative effort, this vast and inspiring community labouring towards a shared goal. Within those 30 days, something magic happens, and I want to be there for it.

Good luck. I wish I could do it but since I can't, I've constructed a similarly challenging task and will be with you all the way.

Thanks. I guess it hasn't been easy, but we'll get through it somehow.
