"Yes, fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can."

- JRR Tolkien

I liked "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" for its determined defence of escapism.

I've heard a lot of good things about that book. I'll have to check it out sometime.

I too had heard good things, and was glad to finally get around to reading it. I liked about 3/4 of it a lot, but had trouble with the ending. It was still a *good* book all the way through, but emotionally I didn't enjoy the end very much.
