Now and then
Jun. 14th, 2009 11:48 pmI never thought the day would come when I would be demanding more sports coverage on TV, but the failure of the free to air channels to show the French Open was quite irksome. ("Well, it's not like you normally watch this one anyway," my sister said. "Of all the Grand Slams, it's probably the one you can most afford to miss." (Being the surface most likely for most players to be not so crash hot on.) "Well, yeah," I admitted. "But I want to watch it this time! And it's still a Grand Slam.")
Being without pay TV or a decent online feed, I had to resign myself to the one hour 'highlights package' Channel Nine deigned to air each night. It just wasn't the same, whether it was the complete lack of suspense or the truncation of matches to fill the time available. Even the historic final seemed to be missing a certain drama and tension. Although maybe that was because the conclusion seemed inevitable from early on.
Still, it's kind of strange to think back to four months ago and how distant a dream this moment must have seemed then.
